CFTC Explores Digital Asset Considerations in Meeting

U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) discussed digital asset policy considerations in its recent Market Risk Advisory Committee (MRAC) meeting.

In her prepared remarks, CFTC Commissioner Kristin Johnson said that the financial system was “witnessing the deployment of Web 3.0” — “the blockchain infrastructure for permissionless value transfer.”

Johnson argued that digital assets could open up new possibilities for streamlined payments, new financial applications, and increased financial inclusion.

However, Johnson also raised questions over how to ensure that the United States’ financial infrastructure remains fair, secure, and leads to economic growth.

CFTC Chairman Heath Tarbert said shortly after the meeting that the commission was not immediately seeking to introduce regulation specifically for digital assets.
