Vitalik Buterin’s Philanthropic Fund Donates 15M USDC to UC San Diego

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, recently donated 15M USDC to UC San Diego's Airborne Institute. Through the generous grant, the renowned institute will be able to conduct further research into the transmission of airborne diseases, such as COVID-19.

The Airborne Institute, which is based at UC San Diego, will use the funding to develop a better understanding of how airborne illnesses spread and how they can be prevented. The team behind the institute also works on a number of other infectious disease research projects, and the new funding will aid their efforts significantly.

The donation was made through Vitalik Buterin’s philanthropic fund, which was launched by the Ethereum co-founder in late 2020. The mission of the fund is to support “causes that promote unalienable human rights”. With this donation, Buterin is taking a major step towards fulfilling the mission of this fund.

The team at UC San Diego's Airborne Institute is incredibly excited to receive this generous funding. Professor David Bolouri, the director of the institute, expressed his delight at the donation: “UC San Diego’s Airborne Institute is extremely honored to be the beneficiary of this generous donation from Mr. Buterin’s philanthropic fund. The funding will help us to continue our efforts in researching the transmission of airborne diseases and furthering our understanding of how they spread and how they can be prevented.”

This is not the first initiative that Buterin has taken to help tackle the ongoing pandemic. In April of this year, Buterin donated $1 million worth of Ethereum to three charities that are helping to support people in need during the pandemic.

Vitalik Buterin’s donation to UC San Diego's Airborne Institute is a great example of how influential figures in the world of cryptocurrencies can use their resources to make a real difference in the lives of people and contribute to meaningful causes. The funding will undoubtedly help the institute in their research efforts and will contribute to a better understanding of how airborne diseases spread.
